Get to Know Your MI501st :: February, 2011

Michael G Karp
Legion ID: 9296
Joined November, 2006

Michael Karp has been a fan of Star Wars since the first time he saw “A New Hope” back in 1977. He joined the 501st Legion in November of 2006 after being inspired to build Boba Fett costume. “I wanted a 1:1 scale Boba Fett to wear and display”, says Michael. While in the process of building the Fett he learned about the 501st while attending a prop party. There he met a few members of what was then the Michigan Squad and they told him about the Legion and that is what pushed him to join. He never did finish the Boba Fett costume, but ended up joining the Legion as 501st Clonetrooper.

Since joining the Legion in 2006, Michael has served as the Garrison Membership Liaison from 2008 through 2009 and as the Commanding Officer for the 2009 – 2010 term. He has trooped 49 events to date. When asked if he has a favorite his reply, “My first one.” favorite still is his first one. It was the Classic Toy and Collectibles Show in Grand Rapids in December of 2006. It was very exciting!” says Michael. “My time trooping, meeting other 501st and also meeting Jeremy “Boba Fett” Bulloch in person!” Being a member of the legion has changed his life by him allowing him to develop friendships with people all over the globe.

Outside of the Legion, "Ripcode," as some of us have come to call him, is a full time computer programmer and also a Paid-on-call Firefighter/Medical first responder.
When asked about his board name, he said "The Ripcode was a toy motorcycle made by Mattel. The line was called “Rrrumblers” which was produced in the early to mid 70’s. This particular model was only made in 1973. It is my favorite “Rrrumbler” still today".

Outside of the 501st, Michael is a husband and father. His favorite past times are hiking, kayaking, hunting and fishing. He and his wife Kelli, who is also a member of the 501st Legion, love to travel.
