What does everyone use for weapons? store bought toys that are added to and painted? scratch built? Any ideas would be good thanks.

Kinda depends on what kind of costume you have. My Biker Scout blaster is an old 1984 Kenner Biker Scout blaster that I gutted and painted (at our COs suggestion) so it is VERY light and almost indestructable. There are kits and tutorials you can find to change a Kenner E-11 Stormtrooper blaster to be acceptable.
Probably the best bet is to look around on the detachment website for the particular costume you're working on and see what they have there. People who make kits do runs on those sites that they don't always advertize anywhere else.
